The DNR warns drivers about turtle crossings

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding drivers to be aware of turtles crossing the roads.

It is their nesting season and many female turtles move from bodies of water to their nesting areas.

This poses a risk for some turtles crossing busy highways, as some drivers learned this week. Several were killed by cars on East Circle Drive on Wednesday. The DNR is asking drivers to keep an eye open for them as they cross the road. The DNR adds that people who see turtles or other animals crossing the road should slow down, and safely drive around them. Also, many people want to help them cross the road but the best approach is to let the turtle cross on its own. There are nine turtle species in the state, some of which are protected.
