Seat belt safety at Kasson-Mantorville High School

KASSON, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Seat belts are a motorist's best defense on Minnesota roads. Speeding, distracted or impaired drivers are all hazards. But not wearing a seatbelt is a leading cause of traffic related deaths.

Monday, seat belt safety took center stage at Kasson-Mantorville High School.

From 2007-2011 more than 1,600 motorists in Minnesota were killed in crashes and only 45 percent were buckled up.

206 of those accidents happened right here in Southeast Minnesota

On Monday, the southeastern Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths initiative brought together more than 30 law enforcement agencies from surrounding counties to the Kasson-Mantorville High School to launch their increased seat belt enforcement efforts.

Deputies, officers, EMT's and Mayo One employees were on hand to share their experiences

Kasson-Mantorville school superintendent Mark Matuska talked about the impact seatbelts have on young people's lives.

Adam Federicksen was saved by his seatbelt when a drunk driver hit him head on in 2004. After a long recovery, Adam counts himself lucky to have survived.

Crashes are the leading cause of teen deaths.

In fact in the last year alone 126 teens were killed in Minnesota and 91 of them were not wearing a seatbelt.
