Fire crews battle home fires in SE and SW Rochester

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Two early morning fires-- one in southeast Rochester, and one in southwest Rochester near Byron-- forced two local families from their homes Monday morning.

The first fire completely destroyed a mobile home on the 6700 block of Meadowbrook St. SE.

The fire was reported just after 5:30 a.m. Monday. Three people were sleeping inside the home at the time, but were able to get out before the flames spread too far.

One of the women who was inside says the fire started in the bedroom from a lit candle. Rochester firefighters were able to quickly get the blaze under control, mostly from the outside. The home is a total loss and one of the firefighters had to be treated at Saint Mary's for smoke inhalation.

No one else was hurt, but the family tells me there was a cat inside and they have not found it yet. The Red Cross is helping the family find temporary housing.

And just a half an hour later-- just after 6 a.m.-- flames broke out at a home in southwest Rochester near Byron. It's located on the Rochester Asphalt property, on 2900 block of Olmsted County Road 15 between Rochester and Byron.

More than a dozen Byron firefighters responded to the blaze.

Byron Fire Chief Jeff Thorpe says the property owner was there as they put the fire out, but no one was home when the fire started. A passerby called it in on their way to work when they saw the smoke.

Thorpe says older homes like this one can make it tricky to get the fire out quickly. No on was injured in the blaze, and the state fire marshall will be investigating the cause of the fire.
