FAA to close 2 Minn. air traffic control towers

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 47) -- The Federal Aviation Administration says it will close two air traffic control towers in Minnesota because of federal budget cuts.

The agency announced the decision Friday, a month after it released a preliminary list of facilities that could be closed.

In Minnesota, towers slated for closure are at St. Cloud Regional Airport and Anoka County-Blaine Airport.

St. Cloud Regional Airport Director Bill Towle says the airport "is certainly not going to be as safe" without the tower.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann says she's "deeply disappointed" with the FAA's decision to close the two towers. She says closing the towers should be "a last, not a first, resort."

Two Minnesota airports on the preliminary list -- Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie and the Crystal Airport -- were spared.
