Vikings plan 2 seasons at TCF Bank Stadium

ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The Minnesota Vikings are now planning to play two full seasons at the University of Minnesota football stadium while their new stadium is built in downtown Minneapolis.

Team vice president Lester Bagley says Friday that's the current working plan. The team and the state authority overseeing construction convened Friday to announce that Minnesota firm Mortenson Construction will build the new stadium.

The Minneapolis firm will earn $12.5 million to build the downtown Minneapolis stadium, but its fee could reach $15 million if it meets certain performance incentives.

Mortenson also built the Twin's Target Field, as well as Target Center in Minneapolis, TCF Bank Stadium on the university campus, as well as the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Vikings had hoped to only play one season at that outdoor stadium. But tentative plans now are to tear down the Metrodome in February 2014 and for the new stadium to be ready by July 2016.
