DNR seeks redevelopment ideas for fort property

Posted:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Some vacant buildings at one of Minnesota's most historic sites could be getting new life.

The state is asking for redevelopment proposals for 32 acres of Fort Snelling's Upper Post. The vacant buildings, constructed about 100 years ago, include a hospital, morgue and barracks.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says the Department of Natural Resources would lease the buildings to developers. They sit on a bluff overlooking the Minnesota River valley. The Upper Post buildings are unheated and have been unused for more than 40 years.

The properties available for redevelopment make up about a third of the old Upper Post land. Past redevelopment of parts of the Upper Post have included federal housing for homeless veterans and an "urban base camp" for Boy Scouts.
