Rochester school tax levy to drop

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Rochester homeowners can expect to see a drop in the school portion of their property tax bill next year.

During a truth-in-taxation hearing Tuesday, the Rochester School Board announced that tax levies are expected to go down by about 1.4 percent. The drop is due to the state's rejection of a plan to get more Rochester students using iPads.

The board is expected to vote next Tuesday to adopt the levy of $37,045,489.

The Rochester School Board is also taking closer a look at a property that hasn't been used in more than two years.

The last time Burr Oak had students in its hallways was during the 2009 school year.

Since then, the school has been in the district's possession, but has gone unused.

Without any future plans for the school, the district is looking at closing it down officially so it can sell the property.
