Baby born in car on Interstate 90

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The birth of a child is often considered one of life's most joyous occasions but for Courtney Matzek of St. Charles, it was also a sudden one.

Matzek began her day like any other when her water broke just before 5 a.m.  A mother of three, she thought she would have time before needing to go to the hospital, but her contractions grew stronger quickly.

Matzek's husband, Isaac, called 911 while driving on Interstate 90 toward Rochester.  Dispatch advised the couple to pull over and wait for an ambulance. Still miles from Rochester Methodist Hospital, the parents stopped just before the Eyota exit.

"I couldn't hardly hold it anymore," Matzek said.  "I had one little push and could feel the head and then another push and she was right there."

Kenzley Ann Matzek was born at 5:01 a.m. with no complications.  The parents wrapped the newborn in a blanket from their hospital bag and Isaac used one of his shoelaces to tie off his daughter's umbilical cord.  Shortly thereafter, an ambulance arrived to take mother and child to the hospital.

Baby Kenzley and her mother were examined at the hospital and received a clean bill of health from doctors.  The Matzeks will bring home the newest member of their family on Saturday.
