Oil leak found in Zumbro River

Posted:

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- Hazardous material crews spent much of the day Sunday cleaning up an oil slick on the Zumbro River.

The oil was found Sunday morning near the Riverview Suite apartments, just north of the Mayo Civic Center.

The Rochester Fire department, police and hazardous materials team came to assess the situation. They were checking to see if they could find the source of the oil and where it was entering the water.

Chief Erik Propotnik of the Rochester Fire Department says, "The source of the sheen is likely run-off. We've been dry for so long. Now we've gotten a lot of rain in the last couple of days so what we're seeing is the oil that's left on the roadways washed into the storm sewers. And now that's collected and come out."

Crews have put a boom at the outlet to stop any further product from entering the water. Authorities say the leak does not put anyone at risk.
