ROCHESTER, Minnesota (KTTC) - The new roundabout on Highway 63 reopened just before 3:30 p.m. Monday. The Highway 63 and 75th Street intersection was supposed to open Friday. But the weekend rain pushed the completion date back.
Safety was the main driving factor of the project. Roundabout intersections may be seen as a nuisance to motorists, but MnDOT explains they are safer than a traffic signal.
"You'd run the risk of vehicles running the red light and people thinking it was safe for them to go. And a roundabout really fixes all of that because even if there is any type of crash it's going to be a rear-end crash and it won't be very severe," said Kristin Kammueller of MnDOT.
Kammueller expressed her thanks to the commuters throughout the summer for their patience.
