Girl Scouts help clean the environment

ROCHESTER, Minnesota (KTTC) - How do you save $6 million in environmental cleanup costs? Put the Girl Scouts to work.

Saturday at Silver Lake Park in Rochester a Girl Scout troop raked leaves and cleared storm drains to prevent waterways from being polluted by runoff and other contaminants.

They joined troops from 49 counties across Minnesota and Wisconsin in an effort to save $6 million in environmental clean-up costs.

The troops all contributed in honor of the Girl Scout's long-standing tradition of community service.

"Girl Scouts has been around for a long time," says Shelly Schultz, one of the troop leaders. "It talks about heritage and legacy and about how this was important a hundred years ago and is still important today.  Giving back to your communities, working through being green and taking the opportunity to experience different things through the patches and the badges."

The Girl Scout's removed over 20 thousand pounds of phosphorous and prevented millions of pounds of algae growth that collect in storm drains and waterways.

All the leaves gathered Saturday will be sent to local treatment centers where they will be composted.
