University of Minnesota considering tuition freeze

Posted:

MINNEAPOLIS/ROCHESTER (KTTC) -- The University of Minnesota is requesting an increase in state funding to pay for a two-year freeze in undergraduate tuition.

The Board of Regents unanimously approved University President Eric Kaler's request for a tuition freeze at a meeting in Minneapolis on Friday.

The board is requesting an additional $91.6 million over the next two years. That's an 8.4 percent increase over the current biennium.

This is part of Kaler's $1.2 billion budget request. His first as University president.

University of Minnesota-Rochester students say a tuition freeze is the right move.

Some students expressed concern that the tuition freeze would be paid for by Minnesota tax dollars but recognized the personal benefit the freeze would have.
