Shattuck-St. Marys investigation continues

FARIBAULT, Minn. (FOX 47) -- The investigation continues after two former teachers at Shattuck-St. Marys in Faribault are linked to cases of sexual misconduct. The story has many different pieces to it, and investigators are taking their time in piecing them together.

The past three days have been rough for anyone associated with Shattuck-St. Marys as more information is being revealed on what really happened and who was involved.

First, the charges Monday against a former theater teacher, Lynn Seibel, who was arrested in Los Angeles on child pornography charges. He now faces 17 charges of sexual misconduct in Faribault, involving six former students.

"As far as Mr. Seibel, it's still open," said Captain Neil Pederson with the Faribault Police Department. "We're anticipating on receiving further calls from possibly more victims or witnesses, people who may have information about that case."

On Tuesday, the story grows deeper. It was discovered that in 2008, former instructor Len Jones had an affair with a female student at the school, and after being approached by the school, he committed suicide. That information was revealed in a separate investigation.

"As either people are talking with either Shattuck, or maybe alumni or people in town, that information has come to light and we've been asked about that, so we've released that also," said Pederson.

Considering the controversy, Pederson says the school is being tight-lipped on certain details.

"They consult with their attorneys to determine what they need to do and what they can do and can't do, and that kind of slows things down on our part in trying to investigate these things in a timely manner."

While this is all fresh, the story may not be over.

"There's been a lot of conversations taking place between people that are alumni of the school and their family members about 'Is this something that happened to you and does this need to be reported?'" said Pederson.

So as people begin to digest the first wave of issues, there may still be more to come.

Investigators are not expecting any extradition problems with Seibel after his child pornography charges are dealt with in California.
