Nail polish worn in support of local boy's cancer fight

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- People all across the country are painting their fingernails blue in support of a Lourdes High School student who's battling cancer.

Will Canan, 14, was first diagnosed with a brain tumor back in March of 2004 when he was in kindergarten.

He's now a freshman in the final stages of his battle with cancer.

While visiting Will, a group of ninth grade girls persuaded him to let them paint his fingernail.

He chose the color blue.

"Every time you look down at your nail, you think of him," said Skylar Drefcinski, Will's friend.

After Will posted a photo of his blue fingernail on Facebook, it went viral.

More than 800 people in 20 different states have now joined Will's "Blue Crew."

"Will's unique. He's a brave kid. I think very few people have gone through 8 years of cancer treatment," said Tom Canan, Will's father.

He went on to say, "He's in the final stages right now and you ask him how he's doing and he'll say, 'I'm fine.' So if that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does. He's always had a positive, upbeat attitude about it."

People are encouraged to join Will's "Blue Crew."

Students at Mayo High School will be painting their fingernails blue on Friday.
