North Central Iowa Genealogical Society
Will hold its regular meeting at 1:30 P.M., Saturday, June 7, at the Mason City Room at the west end of the Mason City Public Library.
The program entitled Genealogical Detours – Solving problems with Indirect Evidence will be presented by Jay Fonkert, a professional genealogist, writer, and lecturer. He currently lives in St. Paul, but his hometown is Mason City.
He specializes in Dutch genealogy and immigration, as well as Midwest research. He has published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and Minnesota Genealogist, and writes a beginning genealogy column in The Septs, the journal of the Irish Genealogical Society International. He is Vice-President of the Minnesota Genealogical Society. To support Jay’s genealogical habit, he works at the Minnesota Department of Health, as a senior workforce analyst.
Jay notes, “genealogical proofs are straight-forward when multiple reliable, primary sources provide direct evidence for relationships. More often, however, the family historian must orchestrate indirect evidence from a variety of sources to clearly identify an ancestor or link together generations.” Jay, using several case studies, will show us strategies for solving problems when direct evidence is thin or lacking.
Please join us for Jay’s presentation and extend to him a warm hometown welcome. Visitors are encouraged to attend.
Memberships in the North Central Iowa Genealogical Society may be obtained by contacting Bill Bjerke at (641) 423-7114 or by completing an application found in the society’s research library at the Mason City Public Library.
